Part M

What is Part M?

Approved Document M (commonly referred to as Part M) is a section of the English and Welsh Building Regulations and principally applies to new buildings which clearly specifies the dimensions and construction standards of features that can be used to improve access for disabled people.

Deta in 2010 introduced a number of new products to satisfy requirements of Part M, this included the introduction of Slimline Grey Gridswitch plates, 1 - 8 gang.

Understanding Part M
3 KEY POINTS TO OBSERVE:
Location, Visibility and Ease of use

LOCATION
Location of switches, socket outlets and control devices which are easy to see and use is essential. This means that they should be positioned at an appropriate height, consistent distance from door frame, far enough away from a corner and clear of obstructions, to ensure ease of use.

VISIBILITY
It should be to easy find the control and recognise whether it is in the on/off position.  Switches, socket outlets on controls shall be coloured so as to contrast with the decor of the surface to which it is fixed.

Light switch front plates shall contrast with the background as should the control rocker in the plate. Difference in contrast must be a least 30 points in light reflectance value(LRV) between the accessory front plate and the surrounding decor. E.g. White rocker in grey front plate on magnolia wall decor or grey rocker on white front plate on dark wall finish. The rule applies equally for light switches or socket outlets on walls and dado trunking.

EASE OF USE
Light switches may be of a large touch sensitive pad or separated rockers, of
adequate size, to ensure proper use and function.

Switch socket outlets should have separated switches, (e.g. Outer edge Rockers) to allow proper use.

Clear indication of “on”/”off” is required for control of switch socket outlets.

Complying with Part M

Deta Electrical has had its wiring accessories tested for their Light Reflective Value (LRV) and by using these values with the known LRV of the background, compliance can be assured.
